Camping in Lagos (or why hammocks are awesome)

We spent 3 nights camping just outside of Lagos in the Algarve region of southern Portugal. There we explored the harbor town, visited Praia do Camilo and surfed at Sagres, the southwestern tip of Europe. Camilo beach was easily one of the most beautiful that we have ever seen. Perfectly clear water, soft sand, rocky cliffs and islands and arch formations in the water. Sadly we didn’t bring the camera down, but if you’re interested, you can check it out here or see below for two shots from the cliffs nearby.

We also had a great experience in the campground and would definitely recommend Turiscampo to anyone who is traveling in the area. I mean, free cheesy cover band on Friday night, what’s not to love? But seriously, for a built up campground with all of the amenities, it was very nice. And the most important of all – suitable trees for setting up the hammock. After a long day of surfing, when you’re completely exhausted, just a little sore, and totally ready to chill out, what better than to stretch out comfortably and swing gently in the breeze. No other way to say it, hammocks are awesome! Thanks so much to Sophia and the rest of the team in Danske Bank Performance Management for the gift. And really nice to meet Filipe (of the self-titled FilSurf Surf School). Thanks for a great day of surfing and really helpful instruction. I think we’re making progress.

We’re planning to camp just outside of Genoa next, so hope to have a chance again soon. You definitely should, it’s great fun and really convenient for camping (just need the right trees).
