After a fairly rough and significantly delayed ferry ride from Colonia, Uruguay to Buenos Aires, we arrived at an awesome wine bar and boutique hotel in the Palermo Soho area to meet Alex’s family. We will spend the next month traveling together south through Argentina all the way to the tip of the South American continent and up again through Chile eventually ending in Santiago.
The cosmopolitan city of Buenos Aires is large but easy to navigate and the people are extremely friendly even if their English is sometimes limited. During our stay, our cultural agenda included visiting two museums and the iconic La Boca area (known as the birthplace of Tango). We also enjoyed soaking up the local culture at several nice cafes and amazing restaurants, including some fantastic Argentinian steaks at Don Julio. That brings us to a new found favorite culinary treat – the herbal oil “Chimichurri” which is typically used on steak but we think also goes great with bread, baked mushrooms and maybe even eggs.
Finally, as a bit of foreshadowing for the next part of our journey, we learned a local saying, “if you’re in a hurry in Patagonia, you’re waisting your time”. So far everything has been surprisingly punctual, but we’ll see if that changes as we head to our next stop at San Carlos de Bariloche near the Chilean boarder.
One of these days, you’ll get Chris to smile for a picture.
