We had an amazing time traveling along the Adriatic coast visiting the cities of Split, Zadar and Rovinj in Croatia, Koper and Piran in Slovenia, and Trieste in Italy. The area offers an intriguing combination of ancient history, picturesque towns, impressive national parks, delicious food and wine, and beautiful, albeit rocky, beaches. We also had the good luck to stumble on a Manu Chao concert, the most impressive cave system either of us have ever seen, and a great local winery.
We boarded the overnight ferry from Ancona to Split on July 5

The beach by our apartment in Rovinj
It was like something out of Middle Earth
We exited the cave system into a massive sinkhole

The swimming area in Koper was right next to the industrial port. But with temperatures in the high 30s, who’s complaining
Vinakoper – the largest winery in Koper. We got a kick out of the gas station style set up for bulk wine purchases
Giant water rats, the size of small dogs, were basically the only wildlife in Koper besides mosquitoes. Not really charming but kind of fascinating
Piran was a beautiful old port city
Museo Revoltella in Trieste. The building houses a very nice modern art gallery as well as the 19th century residence of Baron Revoltella
As a Baron, of course you have a secret door in your library

That cave looks amazing!
That cave just made the top 10 on my must see list.
Yeah, it was really something to see. The two pictures were taken inside of the “water murmuring cave” where the river still runs. We entered through the “silent cave” which was smaller and dry, but had pretty impressive stalactites. We would definitely recommend it.
You just made it even more cool!
